History

In 1965 he Finnish Cultural Foundation, the Finnish Cultural Foundation´s Central Fund and the Family Federation established a supporters´ association for Helsinki Secreterial College. On their initiative the Helsinki Secreterial College was established in year 1966. On first of January 1967 it started its operations on Sturenkatu, in premises rented from Kalliola vapaaopisto.

The federation meeting of students union in Helsinki Secreterial College was held on 2. Of May in 1968 in Kalliola auditorium. There were 78 students of Helsinki Secreterial College present at the meeting. From those students were chosen the first members of the executive committee.

The first members of the executive committee were

· Kaisa Hannula, Chairperson

· Pirkko Kilpiä, Vice Chairperson

· Leena Sirén, secretary

· Satu Ahola, Financial manager

· Marjukka Heinonen, member

· Arja Kokkonen, member

· Sisko Pajunen, member

The students union started their operations in a very active way. They participated in creating a government guarantee for study loan system and housing foundation for the students studying in Helsinki (HOAS).

In the 70´s HSOY organised diversed activities: they were keen on organizing sports and excursion days, jubilees, took part in other studen´s unions campaigns and shared medals. Representation in the National Union of University Students in Finland was active. HSOY was in charge of printing the yearbook and started up a bookstore in the school premises to help recycling the schoolbooks. Besides all this in 1977 HSOY decided to start publishing SIHTI, an own magazine of Helsinki Secreterial College.

In the 80´s HSOY organized first saunameetings and fund-raising with the charity organizations. HSOY was aware of upcoming trends, in 1988 they made a deal with Sun Point Oy about implementation of solarium.

HSOY operations continued alike in 1990´s: the coveralls (ordering them and getting sponsors) and hiring lockers brought new activity for HSOY, but excursions and theater visits reduced. Active editing of SIHTI ended in the beginning of 90´s and even though they tried to resuscitate it in the end of 90´s, the last issue of SIHTI was published presumably in 16.12.1998 according the HSOY minutes. There is no certainty about this.

The 2000 century has been a year of changes for the HSOY. The century began by that HSOY joint up with the Union of Students in Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences (SAMOK). in the year2004 the name of student union in Helsinki Secreterial College was changed into the students in management assistant HSOY ry. Two years later the education was moved to Pasila, where also the students in Helsinki Business College and ADP institute were studying. These seats of learning created the Helsinki Business Polytechnic Helia. In year 2007 Haaga Institut and Helia were merged and this way was the University of Applied Sciences established.
