The dictionary provides you with the essential vocabulary you need to navigate your studies at Haaga-Helia.

3AMK: The collaborative project between Haaga-Helia, Laurea, and Metropolia enables students to take advantage of the course offerings from all three universities and participate in learning pathways that develop new skills tailored to the needs of the future job market.

8-Day May Day: A series of events organized by the student union Helga, spanning approximately 15 days, during which Haaga-Helia associations host Wappu events for students. The name has remained unchanged even as the number of events (and days) has increased over time.

A

Advocacy: Efforts aimed at maintaining and improving the status of students, as well as the quality of education and well-being.

Annual gala: A seated dinner party to celebrate the birthday of the student organization.

AHOT: Recognition of prior learning, which involves acknowledging and validating previous studies or work experience.

Alumni: A person who has graduated from an educational institution. Haaga-Helia has an extensive alumni network that students can join upon graduation.

Appro: The concept of Appro involves visiting designated bars or activity checkpoints and collecting stamps into an appro pass. Once you have collected a sufficient number of stamps, you can exchange your pass for a patch.

Atkins ry: The student association for the Degree Program in Business Information Technology at Haaga-Helia University.

Coverall: A garment worn by a student at student events. Coveralls are used to collect coverall patches from different events.

ESN Haaga-Helia: An association of international exchange students in Haaga-Helia, whose purpose is to organize activities for exchange students coming to Haaga-Helia.

Exam: Haaga-Helia’s online exam service.

FSHS: Student Health Foundation

Fresher: First-year student (a freshman year consists of two semesters)

Freshers day: A welcome event organized by the student union Helga for the students in their first semester. Other students are also welcome to join the after-party.

H

Hattara ry: The local association of Haaga-Helia’s Malmi campus.

HePo ry: The local association of Haaga-Helia’s Porvoo campus

HOAS: The Helsinki Region Student Housing Foundation, rents apartments to students in Helsinki, Vantaa, Espoo, and Kauniainen.

HOPS: Personal study plan.

HOTEM: Hospitality, Tourism, and Experience Management.

HSOY aktiivi: Matalan kynnyksen toimintaa, johon liittyy vähemmän vastuuta kuin hallituksessa työskentelyyn. Kaikki innokkaat HSOY ry:n jäsenet voivat ryhtyä aktiiviksi.

HSOY ry: The Haaga-Helia Business Students’ Association, consisting of students from the old curriculum, Liiketoiminnan palveluratkaisut ja kielet and Languages, Business Service Solutions and Languages and Business Administration programs.

IDS Helga: An international action group under Helga, which aims to promote the integration of international students into the Haaga-Helia student community.

Jodel @Haaga-Helia: Haaga-Helia’s informal anonymous chat channel on the Jodel service.

JOURA: Journalism degree program.

L

Local association: an association that serves the students of the program by promoting their interests and organizing activities. Local associations operate on all campuses except Pasila.

M

MOODLE: The virtual learning environment used by Haaga-Helia.

N

Norms to be observed and appeal proceedings: The Examination Board deals with complaints from students about the assessment of their academic performance or the accreditation of studies from other institutions.

OPS: Curriculum, program-specific.

OLL: OLL. The Finnish Student Sports Federation promotes the well-being of university students.

P

Pore ry: The local association of the Haaga campus of Haaga-Helia.

PEPPI: Haaga-Helia’s study register, where you can keep track of your data, check your grades, and register for courses

R

Representative Council: The Council is Helga’s highest decision-making body, consisting of 20 full members and 20 deputy members, elected by ballot. The associations of Haaga-Helia help students create electoral lists for the autumn elections of the representative body.

RUOKA: Degree programme in Food Production Management.

SAMOK ry: National Union of Students in Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences of which Helga is a part. Nationwide influencing

SharePoint: A cloud service where MyNet, student emails, and work tools work.

Sillikset: The post-annual gala herring breakfast, where herring is rarely served.

Sitsit: An academic table party. At these parties, guests gather to eat and sing drinking songs. The table party may also include short speeches, program performances, or other traditions, depending on the student community. Breaking the rules of behavior is often punished playfully.

Slice: A mobile app that acts as Helga’s official membership ID. Slice acts as a digital student card and gives you access to student discounts from HSL, VR, Matkahuolto, and Kela, as well as national and local student discounts and one-off benefits.

Sture ry: Economy and finance-oriented student association. Membership is free for all business students at Haaga-Helia. Sture organizes events and company visits and promotes the interests of its members.

Tahkon Talli ry: Local association of the Vierumäki campus of Haaga-Helia.

Talko ry: Business students’ association of the Pasila branch of Haaga-Helia.
