HSOY ry – History
Establishment of the association
The history of HSOY begins in February 1965, when the Finnish Cultural Foundation, the Finnish Cultural Foundation Association and the Finnish Population Federation founded the Helsinki Business and Secretarial College Support Association. On its initiative, the Helsinki Secretarial College was founded in 1966. The school began its activities on 1 January 1967 in premises rented from the Kalliola on Sturenkatu.
On 2 May 1968, the founding meeting of the Helsinki Student Union of Secretaries (HSOY) was held in the Kalliola Lecture Hall. 78 students were present and the first board was elected:
- Kaisa Hannula, chaiperson
- Pirkko Kilpiä, vice-chaiperson
- Leena Sirén, secretary
- Satu Ahola, treasurer
- Marjukka Heinonen, board member
- Arja Kokkonen, board member
- Sisko Pajunen, board member
The Student Union started actively and participated in the creation of the state-guaranteed student loan scheme and the housing foundation HOAS.
1970s
In the 1970s, HSOY organised a wide range of activities, such as sports and excursion days, annual parties and participation in events organised by other student unions. It was actively represented in the Union of Finnish Student Unions (SYL). HSOY was responsible for printing the yearbook and set up a bookshop in the school premises. In 1977, the Helsinki Secretarial College started publishing its own SIHTI magazine.
1990s
In the 1990s, the HSOY continued similar activities, but the number of excursions and theatre visits decreased. The introduction of coveralls and the rental of lockers brought a fresh impetus to the activities. The SIHTI magazine ceased publication in the early 1990s and the last issue was supposedly published on 16 December 1998.
2000s
In the 2000s, HSOY joined the National Union of Students in Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences (SAMOK). In 2004, the name was changed to HSOY ry and the education it repsesented moved to Pasila. In 2007, Haaga-Helia was founded with the merger of the Haaga Institute and Helia.
2010s
The 2010s saw significant changes. In 2017, we celebrated 50 years of assistant education and organised the Entusiasmare seminar. In 2018, the HSOY celebrated its 50th anniversary. It was a valuable event and the association is still the oldest student association in Haaga-Helia.
2020s
Vuonna 2020 koulutusohjelman nimi muutettiin Liiketoiminnan palveluratkaisut ja kielet -ohjelmaksi (Business Service Solutions and Languages).
In 2020, the name of the programme was changed to Business Service Solutions and Languages (Liiketoiminnan palveluratkaisut ja kielet). However, the changes did not end there. In the 2022 education reform, the programme was fully merged into the Bachelor of Business program, and a new specialisation offering similar courses is called Asiantuntijapalvelut ja kielet.
The 2020s history are still underway, and only time will tell what the future holds.
